“Girls are awesome!” shouts little Chuck (Blake Cooper) as the freaked-out Teresa flings produce at their heads from the top of a tree. “You’re curious.” Thomas breaks the rules and stays with Minho in the maze overnight, when “nobody ever survives a night in the maze.” (But guess what?)įor my money, the most entertaining moment is when a young woman ( Kaya Scodelario) gets dropped into this boys’ club. “You’re different from the others,” Alby tells Thomas.
Too soon, though, director Wes Ball has us in overly familiar territory.
And there are ominous guys like Gally (Will Poulter), who doesn’t take kindly to rule-breaking and seems a little too comfortable with life in the Glade.
In its early sections, this adds up to an enjoyably “Lord of the Flies” vibe, with a smidgen of “Lost.” There are good guys, like ace runner Minho (Ki Hong Lee) and peacemaker Alby (Aml Ameen) and friendly Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster of “Game of Thrones”).

No one can remember their past, or figure out how to get out. The maze entrance slams shut every night, when creatures they call “grievers” patrol it. They’re walled in by an enormous maze, and a few agile young men, called runners, go into it during the day, trying to map it out. He learns he’s in what they call “the Glade,” and that every other boy there has arrived in the same fashion over the past three years. When it opens, he is surrounded by a group of other boys, chuckling at his terror. He can’t remember who he is, or where he came from. The film’s first two minutes are pretty gripping: A young man named Thomas (Dylan O’Brien, “Teen Wolf”) comes to, gasping and retching, in a coffin-size elevator being slowly raised to. This time, it’s James Dashner’s novel about a group of teenage boys mysteriously imprisoned in a wooded area surrounded by a constantly shifting labyrinth. No, this is - stop me if you’ve heard this one before - an adaptation of the first book in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi young-adult trilogy. In it, our hero must lead his comrades through a dingy gray concrete maze while dodging cyborg monsters, and it all looks like every gaming trailer you’ve ever seen. “The Maze Runner” isn’t based on a video game, but you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise.
